Aluthgamage blames heath and environment ministries for not promoting organic fertiliser

29 Oct 2021

The implementation of organic fertiliser has incurred delays and the roll-out has been a failure because the Health and Environment Ministries have not helped in the promotion of the organic fertiliser, says Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage. “We must accept the fact that we couldn’t promote this together as a Government. The Health Ministry must promote the President’s decision. Did the Environment Ministry comment on the damages this is causing to the environment? As I have always said, we must admit that as the Government we couldn’t promote this properly,” said Aluthgamage. Aluthgamage also confirmed that despite several pressures to re-test the Chinese fertiliser samples again, they will not be tested again. "We must avoid diplomatic issues due to an issue such as fertiliser, and we must handle this issue in a way that will not affect both parties. We have not rejected the fertiliser because it is from China, we rejected the fertiliser because it is not compatible with Sri Lankan soil. If the Chinese can provide us with the compatible fertiliser, by all means, we will accept the fertiliser then," Aluthgamage confirmed. Additionally, Aluthgamage also stated that the ship carrying the current bath of fertiliser will not be accepted by any means into Sri Lanka.
