Amnesty Int’l report on Muslims: Govt. says all citizens will be respected

20 Oct 2021

All citizens irrespective of race, religion, caste or creed will be treated with respect in Sri Lanka, said Co Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr Ramesh Pathirana, in response to the allegations raised through a report published by Amnesty International. In the 80-page report, From Burning Houses to Burning Bodies: Anti-Muslim Harassment, Discrimination and Violence in Sri Lanka, Amnesty International traced the development of anti-Muslim sentiment in Sri Lanka since 2013 amid what it terms as surging Sinhala-Buddhist nationalism. At a Cabinet Media Briefing held yesterday (19), Pathirana responded to allegations against the Government of Sri Lanka for alleged discriminatory policies against Muslims. "As a Government we will ensure that all citizens of Sri Lanka, irrespective of caste, creed, race, or religion are respected as Sri Lankan civilians. We, as a Government, will ensure that all communities including Muslims, Tamils and Sinhalese, have a decent lifestyle. That is the wish of the people and Government alike," said Pathirana. He went on to say he understands that after the incident of the Easter attacks in 2019, certain racial issues did arise within the country, but the Government is not targeting a particular community by the rules that were imposed. Additionally, Pathirana emphasised that the Sri Lankan Government wants to act responsibly and commits to act in the best interest of all communities in the country. Amnesty International's Deputy Secretary General Kyle Ward alleged that from anti-terrorism laws to forced cremations, and from niqabs to madrasas, the Sri Lankan Government has pursued a blatantly discriminatory policy agenda against Muslims.
