Amphan shifts to Bangladesh coast: Landslide risk still high

21 May 2020

By Sarah Hannan The cyclonic weather experienced over the last few days is predicted to reduce from today (21), with Amphan (the supercyclone) likely moving further north-northeastwards away from the island across Bangladesh coast yesterday (20) afternoon, the Department of Meteorology announced. Showers or thundershowers are still expected in the Southern, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, and North Western Provinces, with fairly heavy showers of about 75 mm expected in the Nuwara Eliya, Kaluthara, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Galle, and Matara Districts. Wind speed can increase up to 40 kmph at times over the island. Due to the continued downpour experienced over 10 districts over the last 48 hours and the forecasted showers or thundershowers expected in five provinces, the landslide early warning issued on 15 May from the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has been updated to Level Three.
