A part of the 100 year old public cemetery in the Ranjurawa area which is under the control of the Ambagamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) in Ginigathhena has been bulldozed and cleared under the instructions of PS Chairman, according to the villagers.
The villagers also claimed that when they attempted to file a complaint with the Ginigathhena Police regarding the incident, the Police had refused to accept it. When inquired about this, the Ginigathhena Police Officer-In-Charge told The Morning that he had taken steps to refer the group to the PS Chairman. They did not want to lodge a complaint, and were referred to the PS Chairman to discuss the matter, he added.
Ambagamuwa PS Member Manjula Suraweera Arachchi recently alleged that the said land was going to be used to build some shops. When contacted, Suraweera Arachchi said the public cemetery is located in the Ginigathhena Ranjurawa area, adjacent to the Hatton-Colombo A7 main road, and covers an area of about two acres, which comes under the Public Cemeteries Act of 1946.
Meanwhile, Ambagamuwa PS Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) member Helapriya Nandaraja said that the PS Chairman had abused his power to clear the said cemetery, and added that no proposal had been presented to the PS in this regard. The graves of several war heroes and others who were recently buried had been destroyed due to this, he added.
Several attempts to contact Ambagamuwa PS Chairman Jayashanka Perera regarding this matter proved futile.
