The death of over 8,000 chickens in a Kotadeniyawa poultry farm fire would not lead to a supply shortage, but a lack of poultry feed would pose a challenge to the poultry industry, The Sunday Morning learnt.
All-Island Poultry Association (AIPI) President Ajith Gunasekara said the deaths were not a cause for concern for consumers, but added that the lack of feed should be.
“There are enough egg and meat supplies at present, and the death of the 8,000 chickens wouldn’t lead to a shortage,” Gunasekara said.
He said he was unaware of the cause of the fire that resulted in the deaths of 8,200-odd chickens in a poultry farm in Kotadeniyawa in Waragala.
“I don’t know what happened. I’m yet to hear news of it. It could have been possibly due to a mechanical malfunction,” he added.
Nevertheless, Gunasekara warned that there would be a supply shortage of poultry products within two months due to the lack of proper feed.
“Because of the dollar crisis, we cannot import the necessary feed for the chickens. Soya-based feed is imported from America and this hasn’t been possible or was delayed in the recent months. This will definitely cause a shortage in supplies within the next two months.”
He said farmers had reached out to the Government for a solution.
“We are in discussion with the Government as to what can be done to resolve this issue before a shortage occurs,” Gunasekara commented.
