National Peoples Power(NPP) movement presidential candidate Anura Kumara Dissanayake today condemned President Maithripala Sirisena's decision to grant a presidential pardon to Royal Park Murder convict Shramantha Jayamaha. Dissanayake in an official statement said the President's decision was unfair, unlawful and unjustifiable. He said the president had disrupted the the Rule of law and the independence of the judiciary. Dissanayake requested president Sirisena to re-consider and withdraw his decision to pardon Jayamaha. He further requested the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) and the Attorney General's Department to intervene in revoking the president's decision. Dissanayake said this was not the first time a president had pardoned a murder convict. "Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa granted a presidential pardon to murder convict Monica Fernando, the wife of the Minister of Parliamentary and Christian Affairs, Melroy Fernando." "Former President J. R. Jayewardene granted a presidential pardon to Gonawala Sunil, who was convicted of rape and murder."
