Anura to boycott PCoI subject to lawyers' advice

23 Jun 2020

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said he may boycott proceedings of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) probing incidents of Political Victimization following recommendations by his lawyers. Dissanayake was summoned to appear before the commission today (23) over a complaint lodged by Avant Garde Maritime Services Chairman Nissanka Senadhipathi. Senadhipathi alleged that his group of companies had incurred significant losses as a result of malicious and arbitrary action taken by Dissanayake and a former MPs of the Yahapalana government. "We requested the Commission to provide all documentation as to why I have been named a respondent in this probe, " Dissanayake told reporters today. Dissanayake said he had requested his lawyers to check if the Avant Garde case can be taken up by the Commission. He said following advise by his lawyers he will then decide whether he will participate in further proceeding of the Commission. Dissanayake claimed the Commission was setup to support corrupt officials. "The Rajapaksa government and the corrupt are trying to sabotage the JVP's fight against corruption." "If they think that summoning us to a Presidential Commission will somehow discourage us in our fight against corruption. They are wrong .We are even willing to go to prison for this cause," Dissanayake added.
