AOD Virtual Open Day 2021

05 May 2021

AOD Virtual Open Day 2021 invites creative students from around the island, those who have completed their Ordinary Level or Advanced Level examination, to take an inside look at the Academy of Design (AOD) with a variety of interactive activities scheduled along the way. AOD in partnership with the Northumbria University UK Design University, together with a faculty of designers both local and international, help prepare young minds for the best design careers out there. Open Day was originally intended to be a physical event to be held at the Colombo Innovation Tower, where students could take a look for themselves at what is on offer at the Academy, and have the chance to mingle with the staff and past students. However, AOD Head of Marketing Luciana Perera shared that while their original plans have been thwarted due to the recent spike in the pandemic, AOD has managed to make a smooth transition of Open Day to an online event, commenting they planned for things to be “bigger, better, and more vibrant than ever”, and that is what participants can expect. She shared that only last month, in mid-April, they held “AODVirtual: Open Day” from 3-5 April to great success, where they introduced a new and creative virtual space for future design thinkers to take part in a unique Open Day experience. However, Perera stated that AOD Virtual Open Day 2021 will be an entirely different experience, as they have a dynamic line of activities in store for the students who are interested in a future in design. The four-day event is scheduled to go live starting this weekend, 8 May. Starting from day one, participants will have the opportunity to get to know AOD and their programmes. The students will have a unique and most valuable experience, as the programme offers a virtual campus tour and an introduction to all of the departments available at the academy. Day two is scheduled for Monday, 10 May, and the day is dedicated to visual communication design, and motion graphics and animation design. The programme is set to host workshops and talks by faculty members and industry specialists. This would be particularly useful for students that are still making the decisions and are uncertain of what their future may hold for them. They will be provided with a wealth of knowledge to make their decisions. Day three will be on 11 May, dedicated to fashion and textile design, fashion design, and marketing design. There will be workshops and talks conducted by international and local faculty members, and also an additional component where they will host a virtual fashion show. The final day, Day four, is on 12 May, which will be dedicated to interior design and once again students looking to gain an idea into the area of interior design stand a chance to collect a wealth of knowledge via the workshops and talks by faculty and AOD Alumni. Perera shared that AOD is proud to open this space for students to reach out and speak to their leaders to improve and expand their knowledge in design, which will go a long way when they are making their designs on which creative pursuit they are most well suited for and are passionate about.
