App for expats to buy gas to attract dollars

05 Sep 2022

By Rebecca Pavey   In an attempt to attract US dollars amidst the ongoing dollar crisis in Sri Lanka, Litro Gas Lanka Ltd. is set to launch a new mobile application that will enable Sri Lankan expatriates living abroad to purchase liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders for friends and family in Sri Lanka.  This was revealed to The Morning yesterday (4) by Litro Gas Chairman Muditha Peiris. “They will be allowed to purchase up to two cylinders per order, at an approximate price of $ 15 each, following which the closest dealer will keep the cylinders ready,” he said in this regard. When asked whether the decision was taken to attract more dollars, he replied in the affirmative, adding that the dollars generated through purchases made via the mobile app will be used only for the procurement of LPG cylinders for Sri Lanka. Peiris further noted that the launch of the new mobile app is expected to take place over the next few days. Sri Lanka’s dollar crisis resulted in skyrocketing prices, shortages of medical supplies, power outages, and endless queues for fuel and LPG cylinders, and also forced the island nation to declare a default on its international debt earlier this year.  Meanwhile, the price of a domestic LPG cylinder will be reduced with effect from midnight today (5). The decision was taken following the price drop in LPG in the global market, Peiris explained, adding that the revised prices are scheduled to be announced today.  The prices of domestic LPG cylinders were previously reduced in August, in accordance with the recent pricing formula that was introduced, which is said to be reviewed on a monthly basis.
