Are tourists arriving in Sri Lanka with forged negative PCR reports?

09 Nov 2021

Instances of travellers using fraudulent documents to prove their Covid-19 negative status upon entering Sri Lanka have been observed, The Morning learns. Speaking to The Morning, President of the Sri Lanka Association of Government Medical Laboratory Technologists Ravi Kumudesh said that it is a big risk to allow travelers to enter the country based on such “printouts”. "There have been ample cases where fraudulent documents have been produced. The travelers bring printouts or reports saying they are Covid negative, whereas we have seen many documents that are forged. When this happens, how are we to trust such documents that are sometimes in foreign languages?" Kumudesh asked. In reference to the elimination of subjecting fully vaccinated passengers to PCR tests upon their arrival, Kumudesh stated the decision “invites trouble” as various Covid variants could enter undetected. "The Government has relaxed PCR testing for passengers arriving into the country. This is unacceptable. We have just managed to ease out of the pandemic with the greatest difficulty. With these tests being halted, new variants which have not already been tested in Sri Lanka will creep in,” he said. Kumudesh also warned that Sri Lanka is not in the state to handle another Covid wave.
