A Police Sergeant has been handed a four-year prison sentence for accepting a bribe of Rs. 500.
The verdict was delivered by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court, following proceedings initiated by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
The convicted officer allegedly accepted the bribe from a three-wheeler driver to evade legal repercussions concerning a traffic violation.
The investigation was initiated upon receipt of a notification from the Traffic DIG, leading to the filing of a case encompassing four charges.
Subsequently, the Police Sergeant was found guilty on all counts, resulting in the imposition of a four-year imprisonment term. Additionally, the court levied a fine of Rs. 20,000 and ordered the recovery of the Rs. 500 bribe as a penalty.
