  • MP Harshana Rajakaruna takes dig at NPP, questions how econ. revival is possible with ‘communist’ policy

The main Parliamentary Opposition Party, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), yesterday (16), questioned the Government’s ability to manage the economy, adding that the latter has failed to deliver what they promised concerning the economy.

During a press briefing, claiming that the Government has failed to handle debt restructuring efforts, despite it being two years since the Government initiated the related programmes, SJB Parliamentarian Harshana Rajakaruna said that it is therefore necessary to elect in the upcoming elections, individuals who have shown competency in handling economic matters. He said that this year (2024) would be a decisive one, especially when it comes to the burden of the economy on the people, and that the people should therefore make responsible and wise decisions in the upcoming Elections. In this context, he added that the country should elect a party that is capable of understanding and managing the economic situation.

Meanwhile, Rajakaruna spoke about the proposed debate between the SJB and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna-led National People’s Power (NPP) also of the Opposition. Adding that the SJB views inter-Party debates as a matter relating to democracy, and that it is further complemented by debates between party leaders during election seasons, he alleged that the NPP is attempting to avoid a debate. He questioned whether Sri Lanka can be revived with a communist policy.

In addition, he claimed that when a SJB run Government comes to power, Sri Lanka’s economy would be handled in a manner that benefits the people. He added that the SJB will take the necessary people-friendly decisions in collaboration with the International Monetary Fund.
