The United States (US) donated 35 video conferencing units and opened new facilities at the Angunakolapelessa and Galle Prisons to help ensure virtual proceedings in order to improve prisoners' access to legal services, to speed up trials, and to reduce the judicial backlog.

This is a step forward for the Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Ministry’s virtual courts in Sri Lanka

The US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie J. Chung noted that the US is committed to supporting Sri Lanka’s initiatives that aim to reduce prison overcrowding, streamline court automation, and enhance the overall effectiveness of the judicial processes.
