Inconveniences to tourists: Tourist cops to step up ‘suo motu’ efforts

Although a complaint is required to investigate incidents such as financial fraud involving tourists, the Police stated that the Tourist Police will voluntarily investigate other incidents that inconvenience tourists.

Incidents that make tourists feel uncomfortable, including charging higher prices for the goods bought by them, are regularly reported.

When contacted by The Daily Morning, the Police Media Spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General of Police Nihal Thalduwa said that since most of the incidents that inconvenience tourists are usually aired on social media platforms (recent incidents in Kalutara and Hulftsdorp where they were grossly overcharged and verbally and physically harassed), the Tourist Police investigates such incidents, even when there is no complaint.

"Normally, a complaint is required to initiate an investigation into something like financial fraud involving tourists. That is because a victim has to be there, but, there is no need for such a complaint to investigate other incidents of inconvenience to tourists. Certain individuals' conduct brings disgrace to the country, so, such incidents are always being looked into."

Reports of incidents involving tourists experiencing inconvenience or difficulties in Sri Lanka are relatively common. They can range from minor hassles like poor customer service or miscommunication to more serious issues such as safety related concerns or scams.
