04 Apr 2022

BY Dinitha Rathnayake  Composers of the Wada Karana Ape Viruwa (Our Hero Who Works) song, which was used as propaganda during President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s Presidential Election campaign, apologised to the public for creating such a song. Songwriter Pasan Liyanage, the author-lyricist, and composer of the said song, mentioned this in his social media platform. The song which was used as Rajapaksa’s pre-election theme song when he contested the Presidential Election is now being ridiculed on social media. These days, certain youngsters who have been queuing near petrol stations have released different versions of the song on social media. Liyanage said: “I do not support any political party. I apologise to everyone if I got in trouble for a song. I’m still here today because you loved listening to my songs. So I’m with you this time too. Do not advocate on behalf of parties that are now trying to stay in power forever. Build the country to allow new people. Today, this situation has arisen because of those who have been exploiting the country for their own benefit.” Meanwhile, the singer of the song, Chathula Indrachapa, also said: “Yes, I did the job of singing this song. For that, I only took a payment for my voice. I have given my voice not only to one party and candidate but also to other parties and other candidates’ songs. Everyone makes mistakes, knowingly or unknowingly. But you have to have the backbone to make that mistake and stand up against it when you see the mistake. It is the same for me who sang the song. It is the same for you who voted for the song. Today, I and the innocent people of my country are suffering in the dark, as a result of years of dirty politics. Enough now. Yes, it is time to stop all these games. I was there that day hoping for a country that really works. Today, I am with the helpless people of Sri Lanka who are burdened to live a normal life, including myself.”
