The completion of the railway line carrying garbage from Colombo to the Aruwakkalu Waste Disposal Plant will see further delays due to construction work on the line being held up due to the prevailing coronavirus situation,
The Sunday Morning learnt.
It is learnt that the construction of the railway line would be completed by the end of next year.
Aruwakkalu Project Director Sarath Bandara told
The Sunday Morning that four train engines have been imported to transport garbage from Colombo to Aruwakkalu in January at a cost of around $ 8.8 million.
The Chinese workers who have gone back home couldn’t return to Sri Lanka yet and as a result, the completion of the project had been delayed,
The Sunday Morning learnt.
According to the Project Director, the construction work has been once again initiated together with the local workers and the remaining Chinese workers after the Covid-19 lockdown was lifted.
“Not just Aruwakklau, but all projects got delayed due to the coronavirus,” he added.
The train engines were brought to the country by the Ministry of Urban Development.
The Project Director also noted that they had not calculated the loss incurred due to the delay in the project.
