Asian Games 2018 Updates – Defia Rosmaniar wins first Gold for hosts

20 Aug 2018

Taekwondoin Defia Rosmaniar could not hold back her tears when she was greeted by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Indonesia chef de mission Comr. Gen. (Ret) Syafruddin after the referee declared Defia the best performer in the women’s individual Poomsae category at the 2018 Asian Games on Sunday, Aug. 19 afternoon. Defia is the first gold medallist for Indonesia at the Games. "Alhamdulillah (praise God), we won the first gold for Indonesia on the first day of taekwondo sports. One of them is because of the support of the President, who witnessed Defia’s struggle and friends here directly,” said Syafruddin. Defia said last week she did not want to be burdened with any target, but humbly vowed that she would do her best at the 18th Asian Games. “This is the first Asian Games for me. So I will keep on motivating myself to be able to reach the best achievement. Please support and pray for me,” Defia said. Before being recruited for the 2018 Asian Games, Defia won a gold medal in the women’s individual poomsae category in the 2018 Asian Taekwondo Championships in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, which was held from May 24 to 28. Defia, who is currently in the process of becoming a civil servant at the Youth and Sports Ministry, also won a bronze medal in the Poomsae mixed-pair category along with Muhammad Abdurrahman Wahyu in Ho Chi Minh.
