Automating courts: $ 22 m funding for the project

By Pamodi Waravita   The recent grant of $ 22 million from the European Union (EU) will be utilised to digitise the justice administration system and automate courts, according to the Ministry of Justice. Speaking to The Morning, Ministry of Justice Co-ordinating Secretary Shamir Zavahir said that the EU grant would focus on the digitisation and court automation process, with the ultimate goal of reforming the justice administration system. This week, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the resolution to enter into an agreement with the EU for the funding of the “Project to Assist the Legislature of Sri Lanka”.    Zavahir further stated that the Ministry of Justice has implemented a targeted plan of reformation in justice administration, covering the five key areas of civil law reform, commercial law reform, criminal law reform, infrastructure development, and digitisation and court automation. The total estimated cost for the project will be approximately $ 23 million, with provisions from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) financing the remaining amount.
