Avant-Garde Chairman apprehended at BIA

The Chairman of Avant-Garde Maritime Services Nissanka Senadhipathi has been arrested upon his arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) for violating an overseas travel ban imposed by the courts. Senadhipathi was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at around 11.35 pm last night (16). He had arrived at the BIA via Singapore Airlines SQ 468. Senadhipathi was allegedly receiving medical treatment in Singapore. Recently, the Colombo High Court lifted the travel ban imposed on Senadhipathi after his counsels had informed court that he would appear for the next hearing on 22 October. Senadhipathi has been charged by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC)  for offering a bribe of Rs 35.5 Mn to Rakna Lanka Company Chairman Retired Major General Palitha Fernando. Senadhipathi is also one of the 13 suspects in the case filed by the Attorney General against the operation of an illegal floating armoury. 7573 charges have been filed against the suspects. They have been asked to appear before court on 27  September 27, to receive indictments. The case is being heard before a trial-at-bar at the Colombo High Court.
