Azath Salley appears before PSC

Former Western Province Governor Azath Salley appearing before the Parliament Select Committee (PSC) stated that all Muslims must be allowed to practice the Sharia Law if they pleased.

He had also stated that the authorities had been forewarned several times about the activities of the National Thowheed Jamath (NTJ) group.

Salley said that when he was Governor he had warned the President on a number of occasions while the Muslim community has also warned the authorities prior to that.

Salley further stated that he had held meetings with the then Defence Secretary, Hemasiri Fernando and several other officials and had briefed them on the concerns we had raised on the NTJ.

However, he says no action was taken on the group before the Easter Sunday attacks.
