Azath Salley served indictments

25 Oct 2021

The Colombo High Court yesterday (25) served indictments on former Western Province Governor Azath Salley over the controversial statement he had made during a media briefing early this year. When the case was called before High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja, the incarcerated Leader of the National Unity Front (NUF), who was on a wheelchair, was produced to the court. Subsequently, the indictments filed by the Attorney General (AG) were served on Salley. The Judge, who scheduled further hearing of the case for 2 November, also issued summons on the witnesses in the case to appear before the court on that day. Salley was arrested in March this year, and the AG’s Department claimed that credible information had disclosed that Salley’s speech last year had violated the Penal Code, the PTA, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights Act (ICCPR). Salley had said that the Muslim law cannot be changed since the community respects it, which prompted Public Security Minister Rear Admiral (Retd.) Dr. Sarath Weerasekera to demand his arrest, claiming that it supported religious extremism.
