Bachelet’s report highlights need for UNHRC to ensure accountability for crimes in Sri Lanka: Canada

25 Feb 2021

The recent report of the UN Human Rights High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet highlighted the need for UNHRC to ensure accountability for crimes committed in Sri Lanka, Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau yesterday said. Speaking at the 46th session of the UN Human Rights Council, he said Canada is deeply concerned about the deteriorating human rights situation in Sri Lanka. “Threats to human rights defenders and civil society organizations, suppression of memorialization, forced cremations of religious minorities and the deterioration of the rule of law continue in Sri Lanka,” Garneau said. He said Canada will continue to support measures that will support accountability, reconciliation and peace in Sri Lanka.
