Badulla PHIs on strike over ‘interference’

11 May 2021

By Pamodi Waravita   The Badulla District Public Health Inspectors’ Union (PHIU) engaged in trade union protest action yesterday (10) by reporting on sick leave, claiming interference with regard to the conduct of their duties in combatting the Covid-19 virus, from a particular Community Consultant Physician (CCP) and the relevant Regional Director of Health Services (RDHS). Speaking to The Morning yesterday, PHIU Secretary M. Balasooriya said that the Badulla District PHIU had embarked on a strike action due to the interference the officers faced from the said CCP and the RDHS when carrying out their duties and providing their services. “The CCP in question and the RDHS in the Badulla District have interfered in the quarantining of Covid-19-positive patients and their close contacts, by overriding the authority of the PHIs. In many instances, they have directly prevented quarantine regulations from being carried out,” charged Balasooriya. He added that PHIs are operating under heavy stress with minimal facilities, and that in such a backdrop, interference in their work would just create a health risk and incite the community against them. Balasooriya further said that the Uva Provincial Director of Health Services (PDHS) had held meetings with the PHIs to listen to their concerns and had assured them of remedial action. When contacted regarding the matter, officials at the Uva PDHS told The Morning that a meeting had been held with the PHIs last morning, and that the PHIs had thereafter agreed to report back to duty from today (11) onwards. However, the officials declined to comment on the matter further. All attempts to contact the RDHS and the said CCP of the Badulla District proved futile. The Ministry of Health Epidemiology Unit has recorded 1,879 Covid-19 positive cases from Badulla as of 9 May. On 9 May, Sri Lanka recorded the highest number of positive cases, with 2,659 persons testing positive for the Covid-19 virus.
