Bandula, Prasanna, and Wimal before HRCSL today

  • Follows complaint made about MPs’ houses being burnt
Ministers Bandula Gunawardana and Prasanna Ranatunga, as well as MP Wimal Weerawansa, have been called before the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL), in connection with the investigations into the violent incidents that occurred on 9 May and afterward, including the torching of and damage to several MPs’ houses and properties. Accordingly, the commission is scheduled to note down the preliminary facts required for the probes today (29). The relevant MPs had filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) that their houses were set on fire. The investigations are conducted in accordance with the complaints. Meanwhile, several local council Chairmen have also been summoned to the Human Rights Commission today for the investigations of the damage done to houses and property during the events that occurred on and after 9 May. The HRCSL mentioned that it will only record the basic facts from this group today (29). Meanwhile, three suspects have been arrested in relation to the incidents of attacking the houses of three MPs and damaging their property. The suspects were arrested for the damages caused to the houses of MPs Wimal Weerawansa, Lasantha Alagiyawanna and Arundika Fernando. A 37-year-old resident of the Hokandara area was arrested regarding the attack on MP Wimal Weerawansa’s house by the Malabe Police, yesterday (28). The suspect arrested in connection with damaging the house of MP Lasantha Alagiyawanna was a resident of the Kirindiwela area, who is aged 43. He was arrested by the Western Province-North division officials yesterday (28). Meanwhile, a 45-year-old resident of Dankotuwa has been arrested by Dankotuwa police with regard to the damages caused to the house of MP Arundika Fernando.
