Bar Association wants task force for buildings

21 Sep 2020

The President has been requested to appoint a task force to assess whether the proper prior approval has been obtained for the construction of buildings by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), following the building collapse in Boowelikada, Kandy. The task force should be authorized to deal with any construction lacking proper approvals or which has been constructed contrary to the approvals granted, stated Head of BASL Kalinga Indatissa, in a letter to the President today (21). The BASL also called for the immediate introduction of relevant laws and regulations regarding building approvals and to enforce the law wherever a person is found to have contravened the legal provisions. It was also brought to the President’s attention that a large number of commercial buildings have been constructed in the country either without approvals or contrary to the approvals given during the last two decades.
