Basil assures no tax on essential goods

14 Nov 2021

Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa yesterday (13) assured the public that essential goods and food will not be taxed. He made such statements during a press conference organised by the Finance Ministry. Further to this, he also added that the Government has no plan to release the tax policy at this moment as “some people might misuse it” if they do. In terms of compensation to be paid to farmers if crop yields drop due to the switch to organic fertiliser, Rajapaksa said that although the Government intends to pay compensation, if there are such losses through the Government's budget, it will be done through the agriculture insurance board.  He remarked that funds have been allocated for the same.
