Batik and handloom promotion: Weekly attire for state workers

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa State Minister of Batik, Handloom, and Local Apparel Products Dayasiri Jayasekara is to introduce a system to make it mandatory for government employees to wear batik or handloom apparels once a week as a step to promote local apparel. He has told the media that the prices of batik and handloom apparel will be reduced, which introduces affordable prices in order to make all employees to purchase batik and handloom. Furthermore, the Ministry was planning to take steps to stop the importation of fabric, garment, and apparel and the segments of textile, batik, and handloom. The State Minister assumed office at the World Trade Centre last week. Jayasekara also said he would take the necessary steps to develop the batik industry on par with that of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand to make it one of the major money spinners from the tourist industry.
