Suspects have been given the opportunity to have guests visit them twice a week since 4 November, according to the Prisons Department.
The Prisons Department allowed visitors according to the Health Ministry guidelines on 2 October.
Prisons Spokesman and Commissioner Chandana Ekanayake noted that visitations to the prisons had earlier been suspended due to the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic situation and the restrictions imposed on movement in the country.
However, when the process resumed, suspects were given the opportunity to have guests visit only once a week.
The food parcels brought by the relatives to be handed over to the suspect should be brought as one per suspect and the rice parcels should not be placed in other containers.
The Department further stated that the opportunity given to the suspects to get a week’s worth of food and sanitary ware from the prison canteen is still in effect.
Visitors were barred from entering the Welikada Prison premises until further notice after an inmate at the Welikada Remand Prison tested positive for Covid-19 last year. The Department and the health authorities had made the decision to prohibit visitations after the inmate who was moved to the Welikada Prison from the Kandakadu Quarantine Facility tested positive for Covid-19.
