Religious observances were carried out to mark Binara Poya at the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, Kelaniya today (1 September).
The establishment of the Bhikkhuni Sasanaya (Bhikkhuni Sangha) or Order of the Female Buddhist Monastic took place on a Binara Poya when the stepmother of Buddha, Mahapajapathi Gothami was first ordained.
Mahapajapathi Gothami was the younger sister of Queen Maha Maya who was prince Siddhartha's mother. The Queen died a week after the birth of the prince and was raised by Mahapajapathi Gothami who subsequently married King Suddodhana, becoming Siddhartha's stepmother.
The Vas season (Rainy-retreat) continues during the month of Binara, so the bhikkus and bhikkunis remain in their monasteries, engaged in meditation.
