Black market trade crisis imminent: Shanakiyan

09 Nov 2021

Sri Lanka will be facing an issue where large scale black market trade will begin and will soon go out of control, says Illankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam. He made this statement while speaking in Parliament today (09). "I visited an electronics store recently, and the salesman said that the item which I wanted was out of stock. But, he said that I can get the item from a house where the stocks are readily available. The rich people are buying items and selling at exorbitant prices. Due to the import bans, some items cannot be brought to the country. How can we generate an income when such bans are in place? What is happening is that a large black market ring is being created," said Rasamanickam. He went on to say that because the Central Bank of Sri Lanka has imposed a law where all foreign deposits will automatically be converted to Sri Lankan rupees, foreign workers will brainstorm methods to send money to families in Sri Lanka through a black market service provider. "Banks will crash by the beginning of 2022. This is clearly evident. When this happens, fixed deposits will be withdrawn and the loss will be for the poor people who have worked hard for many years to collect money. The rich will play smart and close their fixed deposits and utilize the money to buy electronics and other valuables which will then be sold at black market rates, whereas the poor will once again suffer," he said. Additionally, Rasamanickam said that the Parliamentarians within the Government have understood the aforementioned problems and are accusing the Government, whereas they do not have the confidence to step out of the Governing Party and stand for what is right. "When these Parliamentarians raised their hands in agreement to the 20th Amendment, did they not know the implications it would bring to the country," he concluded.
