Blow for SL: Chandimal, Dananjaya to miss Asia Cup

Akila Dananjaya is likely to miss at least the first two games of the Asia Cup while Test skipper Dinesh Chandimal is in doubt for the whole tournament due to sustaining a hairline fracture on his right-hand middle-finger during the recently concluded SLC T20 League. The former awaits the birth of his first child.

Sri Lanka will face Bangladesh in the tournament opener on September 15, with their next game set for September 17 against Afghanistan.

The top two teams from each groups of three are to make it through to the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup.

Off-spinner Dananjaya is one of the most useful bowlers for the Lankans in the shorter format of the game thus his absence will be felt by his team.

Chandimal is likely to be replaced by wicketkeeper-bat Niroshan Dickwella who is on standby after missing out on the initial squad. Dickwella scored 158 runs at an average of 31.60 during the recent ODI series against South Africa, though he failed to impress the selectors in the SLC T20 League.

The selectors expect to know more about Chandimal’s injury in the coming week.
