Zeenat Aman is the name of a celebrated Indian film actress who starred in Hindi films, notably in the 1970s and 1980s. Zeenat Aman is also the name of an exquisite French fragrance launched in Colombo by the celebrated French perfume manufacturer, Robertet.
Second runner-up in the Miss India Contest, Aman went on to win the Miss Asia Pacific in 1970. Following her debut in Bollywood, Aman was credited with making a lasting impact on the image of its leading actresses by bringing the western heroine look to Hindi cinema, and throughout her career has been considered a sex symbol.
In 1978, she starred in Raj Kapoor's highly publicised Satyam Shivam Sundaram which also came in for a lot of flak. The movie was heavily criticised for its subject dealing with the notion of the soul being more attractive than the body.
Kapoor however chose to showcase Aman’s sex appeal. Although highly criticised for her exposure, the film contributed a great deal to Zeenat's fame and the movie itself was distinguished as a “work of art”.
Many years down the line, she received an award for her Outstanding Contribution to Indian Cinema at the 11th IIFA awards in June 2010 held at Colombo, Sri Lanka. She dedicated this award to her mother.
However long before 2010 and the IIFA awards, Aman made a visit to Colombo as a star in her own right and in a blaze of glory. She was here to grace the launch of “Parfum Zeenat Aman”, an exquisite fragrance created by the celebrated French perfume manufacturer, Robertet.
And as usual Bonsoir was at hand to record it all. She was housed at the Galadari Hotel in Colombo with very limited access available to her.
I remember Monsieur Herve Bourdeau and his team from Robertet flying into Colombo to be present at the gala launch. It was a grand affaire and I believe we were among the very few who were allowed one-on-one interviews with the star. We were however politely cautioned not to delve into her personal life nor ask her questions about nudity (semi and otherwise) on screen. With drop-dead gorgeous Zeenat in front of me, the questions dangled at the tip of my tongue, mais non, I refrained from doing so.
At that morning’s interview Aman was very easy-going and effusive. She was very much the star and played her role to perfection. She was gracious, very outgoing, and spoke well to the camera. She spoke about her life and work and the role perfume played in her day to day routine. And yes she was delighted to have a perfume named after her.
The evening’s launch was at the Galadari Ballroom with the stars of Sri Lanka’s film industry in attendance. And at the given moment, when the music crescendoed, the spotlights came on, and Zeenat Aman made her grand entrée, the entire ballroom was simultaneously filled with the heady fragrance which came through its air conditioning ducts. Mais oui! Zeenat Aman was all pervasive, in every sense of the word. Colombo spoke about that launch for months to follow.
