Premier League teams including Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Manchester United will be without a host of star players this weekend after the row between English clubs and the Brazilian Football Association escalated dramatically.

According to Goal, the football world governing body FIFA has informed clubs that the controversial ‘five-day rule’ will be imposed by the Brazilian Football Association, who are angry that players were withdrawn from the latest round of World Cup qualifiers.

Top players to sit out

Liverpool trio Alisson Becker, Fabinho (Fábio Henrique Tavares), and Roberto Firmino are all impacted, and will be ruled out of the Reds’ trip to Leeds on Sunday (12). Leeds winger Raphinha (Raphael Dias Belloli) will also miss the game at Elland Road.

Manchester City duo Ederson (Ederson Santana de Moraes) and Gabriel Jesus will miss the trip to Leicester on Saturday (11), while Manchester United midfielder Fred (Frederico Rodrigues de Paula Santos) is out of his side’s home clash with Newcastle the same day.

Fred will also, much to the Red Devils’ annoyance, sit out their opening Champions League group-clash away to Young Boys next Tuesday (14).

Chelsea missing Thiago Silva

Chelsea are in the same position, missing veteran defender Thiago Silva for the games against Aston Villa and Zenit St. Petersburg. Other teams will also be affected.

Tottenham will miss Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso, and Aston Villa will be without Emiliano Martinez and Emiliano Buendia, all of whom were allowed to join up with the Argentina squad for this round of international fixtures

‘The five-day rule’ is designed to protect international teams from unnecessary, club-influenced withdrawals.

Players who are not released for international duty can, in accordance with FIFA, be banned from featuring for their clubs for a five-day period following the conclusion of international fixtures. In this instance, that period covers September 10-14.

Bans for Nice and Marseille

Ligue 1 have docked Nice two points, one of which was suspended, due to the violent scenes that marred their clash with Marseille in August, while OM physio Pablo Fernandez will be suspended for the entire 2021-22 season for his part in the melee.

During the game between the two clubs, Nice’s fans invaded the pitch and clashed with players and staff from visiting Marseille. The hosts had been hit hardest by the authorities’ final disciplinary ruling but several Marseille representatives also face sanctions, with the match set to be replayed behind closed doors.

Suspensions

The pitch invasion at the Allianz Riviera and subsequent fracas was sparked when Marseille star Dimitri Payet threw a bottle back into the crowd, an action for which the ex-West Ham man has been sanctioned with a suspended one-match ban, along with team-mate Alvaro Gonzalez, who had also stood accused of provoking the home fans.

“Regarding the players, defender Alvaro Gonzalez received two games of suspension. As for his team-mate Dimitri Payet, he was sanctioned with a suspended match,” the authorities of the event, LFP, affirmed in a statement.

Italy makes history

Reigning European champions Italy gave another warning of their prowess with a record-breaking start to Wednesday’s World Cup qualifier against Lithuania. The Azzurri went into the match at the top of Group C and with an historic unbeaten run to defend.

They experienced little resistance from their visitors at the Mapei Stadium, winning by 5-0 and adding a new milestone in the nation’s enviable football history, as Lithuania were put to the sword.

Mancini took over in the Italy hot seat following the failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and immediately set about turning around the side’s fortunes.

Impressive unbeaten run

The Azzurri have not lost a game at senior level since September 2018, at the hands of Portugal in the UEFA Nations League.

On Sunday they set the record for the most international matches undefeated in the game’s history with a 0-0 draw against Switzerland, stretching their run to 36 games.

During that run, Italy were crowned Euro 2020 champions thanks to their penalty shoot-out victory over England in July’s final at Wembley, their first title since the 2006 World Cup.

Italy’s unbeaten run now stands at 37, with the Azzurri defeating Lithuania to cement their spot at the top of their qualifying group after defender Giovanni Di Lorenzo grabbed the fifth of the evening for the hosts.
