Musings by Hiranthi: a dream come true

11 Nov 2018

Her illustrations are a precise depiction of her profound artistic talent and she is finally venturing towards her first solo exhibition titled “Musings”. Hiranthi Jayasundere has been in the field for quite some time now, so we spoke to her to get a glimpse of what she has to offer. Hiranthi is the second amongst three children, and revealed to us that her roots go down south to the village of Baddegama. She spent her childhood in Galle, where she was fortunate enough to witness and immerse herself in the surrounding environment. “Vast paddy fields, the river (Gin Ganga), ancient village temple, Christ Church, were all things so very closely integrated into my life,” Hiranthi said. Interestingly, she disclosed to us that her experiences as a girl guide enabled her to embrace a whole different spectrum in life. To be exact, she was selected to participate in the Canadian Crossroads International Student Exchange Programme, where she happened to be the only Sri Lankan student. The freedom afforded to her whilst at home, she thinks, may have facilitated the development of her skills. Hiranthi’s passion for art was instilled in her at a young age, although this remained hidden until she reached the completion of her Advanced Levels. It was when she left to Canada to embark upon a teaching assignment that she enrolled herself at The Alberta College of Art and Design as an external student. “Graduating from this academy was a big achievement for me, as I wanted to learn the proper techniques and obtain a deeper subject knowledge; and I got the opportunity to sharpen and enhance my skills.” Although she has not taken up art as her full time job, she’s an art teacher at the Asian International School, Colombo, which she revealed was kind of a fulltime job for her. “I would rather consider my work as a fulfilling pastime and a hobby which gives me immense satisfaction. I do my painting during my free time and when I’m in the right mood,” she added. Hiranthi’s masterpieces, created out of acrylic, are a reflection of her individualism, for she leaves it all to her imagination and self-expressions. An admirer of many artists, she particularly finds herself driven towards the art of Gerhard Richter, who happens to be an abstract painter. “I prefer to do figurative and abstract art. I do landscape art as well, but I think my passion is for dancers and horses.” Firsts are often an exciting affair for anyone, so is “Musings” for Hiranthi, as exhibiting her artwork has been the longest of dreams. “As I have a reasonable collection of paintings, I thought it may be a good idea to display them in a solo art exhibition, and some art-loving people in this country may find them interesting. This will also be a platform to display my artistic talent to the local audience,” she said. Her aspirations don’t end there, for she wishes to exhibit her work at international art exhibitions in the future. When – 23 and 24 November from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Where – The JDA Perera Gallery, 46, Horton Place, Colombo 7 By Chenelle Fernando
