Run For Their Lives, widely known as RFTL, is an annual charity run which gathers the masses with the aim of promulgating support for one cause. It is organised by the Rotaract Club of Colombo Uptown (RCCU), and is in aid of the Apeksha Hospital (National Cancer Institute) situated in Maharagama. [gallery link="file" columns="2" size="full" ids="15734"] The Chairpersons of the project stated: “We had about 3900 pre-run registrations this year in comparison to last year which was only 2,800. The response has been really good. It was what we expected, and it’s great to have everyone here supporting a good cause.” [gallery columns="2" link="file" size="full" ids="15732"] The marathon marked the commencement of the event. The crowd quite actively partook in the run despite it being a Sunday morning (9 December). One individual who was amongst the first twenty contenders to finish the marathon added: “They’ve organised this event in aid of cancer patients, which is a good cause. So I think what they’re doing is really good”. Prominent figures were also present to extend their support for the cause, one being marine biologist Dr. Asha De Vos. We were able to observe a carnival-like atmosphere with loud music resonating throughout the premises. Food stalls, fun games, and activities for its participants to engage in post-run were a highlight. Photos: Krishan Kariyawasam
