This week we focus on the talented and creative Summaiya or, as people often confuse her with her business name call her, Meraki (which in Greek translates to doing something with creativity, love, and pure soul) which has made her resign to telling people to simply call her Sumi.
A self-taught, full time, and freelance makeup artist and hairstylist, she was born in Sri Lanka and raised in Saudi Arabia and is one of the best up and coming makeup artists and hairstylists, and her clients even include some of the top models in the country.
She firmly believes that every time you interact with someone you leave a little bit of your soul with them, and this is her work philosophy.
However, this wasn’t her initial plan in life and she accepts the fact that life doesn’t always go according to plan and that certain things happen in life for a reason.
What started off as a hobby in order to earn some extra money and an outlet to express her love for makeup and art, has become a successful business in the mere three years she was in the game. This just goes to show that if you do what you love in life, everything else falls into place.
It took her years to learn specific techniques, and develop her skills as a makeup artist. Sumi shares a few tips with us so that we too can be makeup artists at home.
1. If your face is excessively oily, dab a bit of translucent powder before you apply foundation on the areas of your face that tend to get oily. This helps your foundation last longer.
2. Spraying your face with a thin layer of setting spray once before your makeup application and once after helps keep your makeup stay in place longer.
3. For a perfect wing, use the scotch tape method. Just stick a scotch tape in an angular fashion on the sides of your eyes and let the ends guide you to achieve that killer winged eyeliner every single time.
4. You can enhance eyeshadow that does not perform well by spraying a little bit of water onto your brush.
5. Always use a primer to make your eyeshadow pop. You can see a major difference in your eyeshadow when you use a primer on your lids.
6. For longer lasting lipstick, apply lip liner first and then lipstick and then place a tissue over your lips and dab some setting powder on top, and then repeat the process once more and you’re good to go for the rest of the night.
7. To get rid of stubborn waterproof makeup, a very affordable makeup hack is to use some sort of oil like olive oil or coconut oil. The oil breaks down the makeup and is very gentle on your skin compared to most makeup removers. It is really good for the skin too and also conditions your lashes.
