Building collapse due to design flaw

21 Sep 2020

The collapse of the five-storied building in Kandy was caused by a mismatch in the structure's design in relation to the valley region, Senior Scientist, National Building Research Organisation (NBRO), Dr. Padmakumara Jayasinghe told The Morning today (21). "The construction of buildings in valleys should be done differently to flat terrain ground; since the construction of the said building was done on loose layers of soil in the valley region, the building had caved in due to the ground not being able to bear its weight, "Jayasinghe further stated. The official Emergency Respond Report is expected to be released later today. A second team of geologists and sociologists will be deployed to analyse the material quality of the structure tomorrow (22), once the debris has been cleared.
