23 Dec 2020

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is scheduled to meet virologists today (23) to discuss the issue of burying Muslims who have died of Covid-19, Health Ministry sources disclosed to The Morning. As of now, the Government has not made a final decision on the matter, despite several options being under consideration. Meanwhile, Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr. Asela Gunawardena has sent a letter to Minister of Justice Ali Sabry, in response to the proposal to place the bodies of Muslims who died of Covid-19 in refrigerated containers until a definite decision is made regarding their burial. In his letter, the DGHS has requested five refrigerated containers to be provided to the chief judicial medical officers in Colombo, Kalutara, Kandy, and Negombo, and the Ashraf Memorial Hospital in Kalmunai.
