Businessman and 6 others remanded over Maligawatte stampede incident

The Muslim businessman and six others who were arrested over the Maligawatte stampede incident have been remanded until 4th June by the Colombo Magistrate's Court. Three women were killed and nine sustained injuries in a stampede this afternoon when a large number of people gathered at the residence of the wealthy businessman who was distributing cash to mark the 27th day of the Ramzan fast. Over 300 people had gathered to collect the Ramazan handouts in the residence located in Jumma Masjid Street, Maligawatte. The Police said the businessman had not informed the police, the respective Grama Niladhari officer or the PHI on the distribution programme. The injured persons are currently receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital.
