The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) is to take legal action against those who imported and distributed fake basmati rice in Pettah.
On receiving several complaints, the authority raided rice retailers in Pettah last week and found out that a long white rice grain was being distributed to shops, labelling it as basmati.
Accordingly, a lab test has now confirmed that the stocks which have been checked by the CAA were not real basmati rice stocks but are fake basmati rice.
CAA Director Asela Bandara said that stern legal action would be taken against the importers.
Meanwhile, the authority requested the public as well as the retailers to be vigilant when purchasing rice from such deceitful importers.
