Cabinet approves minimum bus fare hike to Rs. 20

14 Mar 2022

The approval of the Cabinet was received yesterday evening (14) for bus fares to be hiked following the increase in fuel prices last week, with the minimum bus fare rising to Rs. 19-20. The National Transport Commission Director General Commander (Retd.) Nilan Miranda said on Sunday (13) that the minimum bus fare would increase to around Rs. 20. The All-Ceylon Private Bus Owners’ Association (ACPBOA) had warned that bus services would be disrupted from yesterday (14) unless a diesel subsidy is provided or bus fares are increased, and many bus commuters around the island were seen complaining yesterday about a lack of buses on the streets.  Both Lanka Indian Oil Corporation (LIOC) and Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) announced sharp fuel price hikes last week, citing the significant depreciation of the Sri Lankan rupee against the US dollar.
