Cabinet gives green light: Ruwanpura Expressway construction this year

The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to commence the construction work of the 76 km stretch of the Ruwanpura Expressway that joins Kahathuduwa, Ingiriya, Ratnapura, and Pelmadulla, before the end of the year.

Although the previous Government had planned to commence the respective expressway project with foreign funds, it has now been decided to cancel the agreement with the foreign company and to locally fund the project.

“Although the project was planned with foreign funds, the implementation of the project under local funds has been found to be more beneficial to the country,” the Cabinet of Ministers had observed.

Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal presented by Highways Minister Johnston Fernando to commence the project using funds from local banks and with the services of local construction companies.
