29 Mar 2021

At the request of Power Minister Dullas Alahapperuma, a Cabinet Sub-Committee comprising Ministers Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Bandula Gunawardena and Ramesh Pathirana has been appointed to take action on the current power generation plans and proposes measures to mitigate possible shortcomings, the government said. The recommendations of the Ministerial Sub-Committee should be submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers within two weeks and its first committee meeting is scheduled to be held today at 03.00 pm. The National Policy Framework of the government emphasizes that 70% of the maximum use of renewable energy should be from renewable energy sources. Accordingly, it is the policy of the Ministry of Power to reduce the use of diesel and fuel to generate power to 5% by 2025 and to limit it to 1% by 2030. In this policy framework, the future of diesel and fuel power plants currently run by the public and private sectors will be specifically considered.
