Cabraal says CBSL looking at digital currencies

24 Nov 2021

While stating that the roles of Central Banks are being threatened by various situations such as the introduction of digital currencies, Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Ajith Nivard Cabraal said that Sri Lanka is looking at introducing digital currency. He made such remarks while addressing a meeting in Colombo yesterday (22). “The world is in a situation where there are tremendous new changes that need to be faced. Artificial Intelligence is now taking over many institutions. Roles are being threatened in Central Banks by various situations like virtual currencies,” he said. Accordingly, the Governor noted that the Central Bank will look at digital currency as a response to this. “One of the responses is that the Central Bank is also looking at digital currencies. Today, let us also dedicate ourselves to finding new ways in which we can service our clients better so that our economy may grow as we grow together,” he added.
