Cardamom plucking women lost in Sinharaja return home

14 Dec 2021

The two women who were reported missing after venturing into the Sinharaja Forest Reserve in order to pluck cardamom have returned home, The Morning learns. Speaking to The Morning, Police Spokesperson SSP (Attorney at Law) Nihal Thalduwa said that following their safe return home, the duo has been transferred to the Deniyaya District Hospital for a medical check up. The women were reported missing 2 days ago after they had left home to collect cardamom inside the reserve. "They had left home to collect cardamom and were reported missing to the Sooriyakanda police station. The women were from Deniyaya in Matara, and due to the severe fog and rains, they had lost their way. They had been wandering in the forest for 2 days, but just a little while ago, they found their way back to the nearest wildlife reserve office. We assume the women have walked over 25-30kms and have endured harsh weather conditions, but they seem physically well. They are now being sent to the district hospital for a medical analysis. But, thankfully they seem physically well," said SSP Thalduwa. He added that once the women have rested and are in a stable position, the Sooriyakanda police will further investigate their ordeal. "As of now, we are happy that they are safe. The search operation that had been launched by Sri Lanka Police, Sri Lanka Army, and the Police Special Task Force are happy that this ended in a success," SSP Thalduwa concluded.
