Following the controversial statement made yesterday (18) by the Archbishop of Colombo, His Eminence Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith concerning the Easter Sunday attacks, the Cardinal has since clarified his statement today (19).
Yesterday he said that the Easter Attacks were carried out by those who wanted to increase their political power, and not by religious extremists. He also added that the group of people concerned used religious extremism to achieve this.
Today, the Archbishop stated that he was not referring to any political groups in the country. Instead, he was referring to groups outside Sri Lanka who back Wahabist ideals in other countries.
