Cardinal slams proposed X-mas tourism festivities

27 Sep 2022

  • Criticises subject ministers for planning to spend on Christmas celebrations without providing relief to needy
BY Buddhika Samaraweera Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith said that instead of providing relief to citizens that are extremely disadvantaged at present, the key stakeholders of the tourism sector, including the ministers in charge of the same, are preparing to spend a vast amount of money to celebrate Christmas. Speaking during a mass at the Mattumagala Sacred Heart Church on Monday (26), he said: “Christmas is coming up. I saw that the leaders of the tourism industry, including the ministers in charge of tourism, are planning to decorate the city of Colombo with lights to celebrate the Christmas festival. What is the point? Pockets are empty. Sri Lanka has become a country that is begging from every country in the world. It is an empty pocket after fake shows.” Claiming that money is currently being printed and distributed, Archbishop Ranjith said that a country cannot continue in this manner. He charged that if the leaders had real concern for the poor, they would not waste their time in Parliament, but instead go to the people and inquire about their pain and suffering. However, he claimed, current Parliamentarians keep blaming each other in Parliament, setting aside their duty of resolving the people's issues.  “Without finding solutions to the issues faced by the people, leaders are behaving childishly, blaming each other. Is this their responsibility? Hundreds and thousands of people are starving, as they have no food today, and children are falling sick at school due to the lack of food and nutrition. However, the leaders are acting as if they don't hear and see the sorrow of the people,” the Archbishop added. Given the economic crisis that has arisen in the country due to the shortage of foreign exchange reserves, a large number of people have lost their jobs and sources of income. Also, as a result of the huge decrease in the value of the Sri Lankan rupee compared to the US dollar, inflation in Sri Lanka has increased drastically, and the prices of goods and service charges have increased significantly within a very short period of time. In this situation, a significant number of the country's population has become unable to meet even their basic needs, including food.
