Caroline, Chula arrested and enlarged on Police bail

09 Apr 2021

  • Ordered to appear before C’mbo Magistrate on 17th

Following the arrest of reigning Mrs. World Caroline Jurie and Model Chula Padmendra by the Cinnamon Gardens Police earlier yesterday (8) over the forcible de-crowning of the current Mrs. Sri Lanka 2020, the two suspects were subsequently enlarged on Police bail.  They were arrested on the basis of a probe into a complaint filed by Mrs. Sri Lanka 2020 Winner Pushpika De Silva citing the alleged infliction of injuries and criminal intimidation, said Police Media Spokesman Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Ajith Rohana yesterday.  He said that the complainant had lodged her complaint at the Cinnamon Gardens Police Station following the incident that occurred on 4 April 2021 at the Mrs. Sri Lanka 2020 pageant.  The two suspects are to appear before the Colombo Magistrate on 17 April.  Further investigations are being conducted by the Cinnamon Gardens Police.  The alleged injuries are said to have been inflicted by Jurie and Padmendra when the crown was removed by the duo from De Silva’s head after the latter was declared the Winner of Mrs. Sri Lanka 2020 at the finale of the pageant which was held at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre. After this, the two declared the first runner-up to be the winner and crowned her, claiming that De Silva is ineligible to win the title as she is a divorcee and that Mrs. Sri Lanka needs to be married.  However, during a press conference held on 6 April at a hotel in Colombo, where De Silva was re-crowned, she said that she is not a divorcee and that her divorce proceedings were still pending, and that she is also a single mother. “I dedicate my crown to all single mothers,” she said.
