Cases against all suspects arrested on charges of using drugs or possession of drugs for own use would be filed in courts before Monday, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said today.
He said the decision to expeditiously file cases against those arrested over using drugs was taken to reduce congestion at prisons.
A special meeting had been held via video technology today to instruct senior officers and Crime OICs of 44 police divisions, the DIG said.
Following the instructions of the Attorney General and the Justice Minister, the IGP has instructed to expedite case against those arrested over using drugs.
“The IGP has already issued a circular in this regard. Cases will only be filed against those used drugs. Those who wises to get the cases completed can request for bail from the Magistrate’s Court or plead guilty. However, the suspects arrested for smuggling drugs will not get any concession,” he said.
