CBK says SLFP-SLPP deal marks the end of SLFP

05 Nov 2019

Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga said the agreement between the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) marks the end of SLFP. Bandaranaike expressed these views in a letter addressed to SLFP Chairman President Maithripala Sirisena, yesterday. She said the 12th paragraph of the agreement to form the coalition between the SLFP and the SLPP was sufficient to confirm her doubts/views on the alliance. She further claimed that according to the constitution of the SLFP, the decision to support the SLPP was not taken through the convening of the Party's Central Committee meeting. Kumaratunga said, as a member of the SLFP, she was not informed/invited to the party's central committee meeting since June last year. She noted that she was only informed of a Central Committee meeting while she was abroad in May/June this year. Kumaratunga said, to date, the party's Executive Committee and its All Island Executive Committee members are yet been formally informed of the Party's decision to support SLPP candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa. "One and half years ago, I have written to you(President) many a times putting forth fair arguments against a coalition between the SLFP and the SLPP. However, the SLFP has taken a rash decision beyond its constitution and tradition. I was not consulted during this process," Kumaratunga said. She further stressed that her decision to support the Democratic National Front (DNF) presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa in no way affects the SLFP. The former Head of State further added that Opposition Leader  Mahinda Rajapaksa has not been subject to disciplinary action for taking up the leadership of the SLPP.
